A quote from Charles Hodge as he explains the atonement and his position of "for whom did Christ die?":
"No man pays a ransom without the certainty of the deliverance of those whom it is paid. It is not a ransom unless it actually redeems. And an offering is no sacrifice unless it actually expiates and propitiates". (p 548, volume II Systematic theology).
